The Art Gallery

With the abolition of the religious guilds, the Municipality of Montefalco found itself managing all the assets that had previously belonged to the church, including a number of works of art. These were initially housed in the offices of the Palazzo Comunale.

FROM PANELS TO STATUES, BY WAY OF CANVASES

The Art Gallery

In 1895, all the works were moved to the Church of San Francesco and displayed without any particular criteria, giving the church an extremely dull, drab appearance and detracting from the significance and appeal of the works.
There was a real need to renew the look of the exhibition room and around 1990, restoration of the former monastery premises made it possible to create a suitable venue for these pieces.

The exhibition spaces house movable works such as canvases, panels and fragments of frescoes from other churches in the area, as well as textiles and furnishings, by the likes of Antonio Aquili, known as Antoniazzo Romano, Foligno’s Niccolò di Liberatore, known as L'Alunno, Cristoforo di Iacopo and Melozzo da Forlì. Several pieces are by Francesco Melanzio, an artist born in Montefalco around 1460.
There is also a varied collection of textiles, reflecting the strong link between the religious and civil spheres: liturgical hangings, altar cloths, cushion covers, curtains, fragments of embroidered fabrics, shawls and shoes. Evidence of tournaments and games is the Saracen, a puppet used in jousting. Civilian uniforms, such as tailcoats, waistcoats, bicorn hats and evening dress, complete the collection
